Serving God for 60 Years at Dorothy Lane American
Baptist Church

We are a small church with a big heart located across from the Community Golf Course on West Dorothy Lane in Kettering, Ohio. We are a loving fellowship of people striving to walk Jesus' way. We cordially invite you and your family to join us in our journey together.

Our Sunday worship service starts at 11:00 am and lasts about an hour. We have a nursery available for infants and toddlers, but children of all ages are welcome in our service. After worship, we gather for refreshments and conversations. Please join us!

DLABC Leads Bingo at the Oaks

Did you know that we have a Bingo ministry? While that may sound a little unusual, it is a staple of our monthly activities. This ministry happens just a few doors away from the church at the Oaks Nursing and Rehab Center (Capital Health Care Network – The Oaks of West Kettering).

We lead Bingo by helping the residents get Bingo cards and chips. Many of the players use several boards at once! One resident, who is blind, brings his own boards that are marked in braille. Some helpers sit with the players to assist them in hearing the called numbers, and to ensure they get the markers placed. Some helpers operate the ball tumbler and call the games, or put the balls with the called numbers in a rack. The numbered balls are placed in the rack in order, and are used to check against when someone gets a B-I-N-G-O! Some helpers verify that a player’s bingo is valid.

In Bingo, there are many games. In addition to winning by making a straight line, there is postage stamp, X, 4 corners, and cover-all, which is the last game played at the Oaks. At the end of our time with the residents, they each get to choose one of the small prizes we take, regardless of if they have won a game. We are always looking for great prizes, and the players like a wide variety of things, from packaged snacks and small figurines, to seasonal items and things that hang on the wall or door.

Our time at the Oaks is from 2 to 3 on the first Tuesday of every month. From 3 to 6 helpers assist each time. There are around 15 residents who play, and that number can be smaller or larger. Bev Scarpelli, member of the Caring/Mission Board, leads this program for DLABC, and is always ready to talk to those who are interested in helping with Bingo.

Pastor Rita McClure, who passed away in the fall of 2019, had the vision to start this ministry while she was ministering with us in 2014-2016. We remember her with love and appreciation!
In February, the American Baptist Women’s group is helping with Bingo and providing a Valentines Day Party for the players. We look forward to this special opportunity for ministry with the residents at the Oaks.
